Quinn Farm & Ranch was started by Emmet and Alice Quinn June 12, 1920, their wedding day. By the time their son, Mack took over in 1948, the wheat and cattle ranch had expanded from 320 acres to over 1800. Mack increased the farm to 2400 acres and introduced chemical herbicides and fertilizers to the farm in the 1950's. Mack's son, Bob took over the ranch in 1978 and in 1988 stop using all chemical inputs and adopted a regenerative organic system and developed a 9 year rotation based on alternating years of soil building crops and cash crops. In 1983 he added Montana Flour & Grains to help him market is crops directly to customers (this enterprise was sold to the employees in 1999), In 1986 he introduced an ancient wheat to the organic food market under the trade mark of Kamut. In 2013 a high-oleic safflower crushing enterprise was added to the farm and in 2015 a snack food enterprise (Big Sandy Organics) using ancient wheat and the oil grown on the farm was created. By 2018 the farm consisted of 4000 acres and was rented out the 2 employees who continue to farm it as certified organic. Bob retained 4 acres of organic ground which he uses for experimentation of better organic systems and growing his own food as well as experimenting with growing dry land vegetables and a small orchard and developing a subterranean greenhouse.
